Happy International Women's Day! Call me ignorant, but I never knew Women's Day was so popular. I knew there was a women's month but never a specific day celebrating women. It's actually a really popular day in Russia too. It's more popular than Valentine's Day. I mean I got TWO days off of work for it! I got a ton of flowers from my company and students, but I really didn't expect to do anything special for today. Mostly because, like Valentine's Day, I think it's kind of ridiculous to have some random day to celebrate your significant other. But I guess while in Russia you do as the Russians do. Anton and I went to Gostiny Dvor for lunch and after we ordered our food he said he needed to go to the bathroom. It's very common in Russia to wash your hands before a meal. I know it sort of is in the USA, but it's actually a lot more common in Russia. He was taking a while, but I really didn't think much of it because it was our first time there since it was remodeled, and I figured he just couldn't find it. Then he came up behind me with these beautiful flowers. It was completely unexpected. I usually don't post sappy things like this, but in an attempt to post more every day things in my life I figured I should.
Here is to all the wonderful, strong women in my life! Happy Women's Day!
I am an American expat living in Russia. When I'm not teaching English or trying to master the Russian language I am taking photos of old buildings, graffiti, or abandoned places. Want to know more?
